Among the songs, apart from the title song, are "Esse amor" (This love) and "Branquinha" (Little white one) inspired by and dedicated to Dedé Veloso, his ex-wife and Paula Lavigne his present wife. The hit is "Meia-lua inteira", by a composer that is becoming famous and is a percussionist in his band: the Baiano Carlinhos Brown. "Estrangeiro" is his first record to be almost simultaneously released abroad. The reviews in America are very good. The singer and composer David Byrne, band leader of the Talking Heads, pays enormous compliments to Caetano and his art.

May New York revisited: "Caetano" is taken to the American public. He begins speaking to the press again. He still chooses his interviewers though (one of the first being Waly Salomão, a friend on a TV Bandeirantes program. For the most part the press is still given the silent treatment.
November Returns to New York, this time to record, produced by Arto Lindsay and Peter Scherer, two Americans that make up ‘Ambitious Lovers’ (Lindsay is an old friend who used to live in Pernambuco state). The work will continue until March next year.
December The "Caetano Veloso" songbook is published by Lumiar publishing house and produced by Almir Chediak. It is in two volumes and has the lyrics and music to 135 songs. There is a big party to celebrate the event. |

14th February The great Brazilian artist gives his statement to the Museu da Imagem e do Som - MIS - de São Paulo (Image and Sound museum). Present as interviewers are the Paulista poets Augusto and Haroldo de Campos and Décio Pignatari, as well as the Baiano psychoanalyst, also a friend Tenório Cavalcanti.
April Shows in Europe.
June Re-release of "Araçá azul", a radical and crushing experience of almost fifteen years back.
September Release of "Caetano", his new LP-CD, with anticipated sales of 100 thousand copies. It has two hits: "Vamo comer" (Let’s eat) (a partnership with Tony Costa) and "Fera ferida" (Wounded Beast) (by Roberto and Erasmo Carlos). And two classics: "Eu sou neguinha?" and the extremely beautiful "O ciúme"( Jealousy). Differently to other times, the release of this record isn’t accompanied by interviews. That is because Caetano is upset with the press, decided not to talk to reporters any more. He has remained silent for a while and will continue to do so for even longer. It’s yet another chapter of the eternal divorce story of artist and reporters - starred in Brazil by Caetano Veloso.
October The promotional show for para "Caetano" starts his national tour that will extend through 1988. |

Separated from Dedé Veloso, Caetano and carioca Paula Lavigne start living together. "London, London", the poet-musicians sad exile song is shown to new generations by a new recording by the group RPM, sung by Paulo Ricardo. Fifteen years later it again makes the hit parade.
April Caetano has his first try at making movies, "O cinema falado" (Spoken movies) (the title is from a samba by Noel Rosa). The film is made in only three weeks, with no repetition of shots (the cash is short), and will be much commented on. Caetano’s poetical daring is censured, "Merda" (Shit) is not allowed to be performed. It was composed by him on order for the play "Miss Banana". The song pays homage to theater people - "merda!" is the expression used in Brazil for "break a leg" - to wish good luck from one actor to another before going on stage.
May Rede Globo screens "Chico e Caetano", a monthly program where both artists sing and present guest artists; among these are Cazuza, Jorge Ben Jor, Elza Soares, Tom Jobim, and international attractions like the Argentine, Astor Piazzola and the Cuban Silvio Rodrigues. The program becomes the ‘musical darling’ of Brazilian TV in 1986, and everyone wants to take part except the Baiano Marcelo Nova of the rock band Camisa de Vênus who says he refuses to take part of "flirting on TV...".
May Recording in New York of an album specifically destined for the North-American market.
June "Caetano Veloso e violão" opens in São Paulo an intimate show that will be shown in Rio in August.
August Release of the album "Totalmente demais" (Totally too much), recorded live during the "Luz do solo" shows. Among the chosen songs his "Vaca profana" (Profane Cow) and "Dom de iludir" (The gift of deluding), released before by Gal; "Todo amor que houver nessa vida"(All the love in this world), by Frejat and Cazuza, and the title song, by Arnaldo Brandão and Tavinho Paes, that would be censured for the next three years. The album breaks his sales records, reaching 250 thousand sold copies thereby giving Caetano a Platinum Disc.
September Sensational opening at the 3rd Rio de Janeiro Cinema Television and Video Festival, of his film "O cinema falado", his old dream comes true. It’s applauded by great national directors and artists but heavily criticized by others. It is a film about cinema and the arts in general, an independent production that uses experimental language, a very personal tone and almost only friends acting in it. Release, by the Nonesuch label, of "Caetano Veloso", the so-called "American record", which receives good reviews. The repertoire includes remixes of his own songs and of other composers in acoustic arrangements; a medley unites "Nega maluca" (Crazy blackwoman), by Fernando Lobo and Ewaldo Ruy, and "Billie Jean", by Michael Jackson. Another great American composer present on this record is Cole Porter (like Caetano, an exceptional lyricist), with "Get out of town".
6th December Peace is re-established between two ex-friends. In a Concrete Poets meeting in São Paulo, where a 30 year celebration of the concrete movement occurs, Caetano and Décio Pignatari finally make-up, two years after having savagely attacked eachother through the press.
26th December The last showing of the "Chico e Caetano" show. |
