28th of January Salvador finally gets to see "Tropicália 2" at the Parque de Exposições.
February "Atrás da verde e rosa só não vai quem já morreu" ("Only the dead don't follow the green and pink" - Green and pink being the colors of the Mangueira samba school). The paraphrase of the old and immensely successful carnival song of Caetano's, gives name to the theme of the Mangueira Samba school, which pays tribute to Caetano, Gil, Gal and Bethânia. The four of them do a show at the school and later shine in the parade on the Marquês de Sapucaí Avenue, in Rio, during Carnival. Caetano, who will later write a samba for Mangueira, is enthusiastic and very emotional after the procession.
May Time in the studio: and "Fina estampa" is being gestated. Polygram had asked him to produce a collection of his work translated into Spanish, to expand their Latin American market, but Caetano preferred to
record latino classics reworked into a bossa-nova perspective. He called the maestro violinist Jacques Morelenbaum to work on the musical arrangements and do the musical direction, he is a musician in his band who played for years with Tom Jobim.
1st of June The Doces Bárbaros, Caetano, Gil, Gal and Bethânia return to sing together, this time at the Royal Albert Hall, in London; the drummers from Mangueira samba school put in a very special appearance.
June and July "Tropicália duo" - the acoustic "Tropicália 2", with only Gil and Caetano, choir and guitars - is exported to Europe and the United States.
August Caetano Veloso meets Pedro Almodóvar, in Madrid. A great admirer of the Baiano's work, the director includes a recording of "Tonada de luna llena" (by Simon Diaz) done by Caetano (on the CD "Fina estampa") in the final scene of his film "The flower of my secret ". A show in Naples another encounter: with Lucio dalla, great name of modern popular Italian music. Upon his return to São Paulo, at Tom Brasil, the first of the few shows of "Fina estampa" on national territory.
October "Caetano Veloso e violão" brings around 40 thousand people to the praça da Apoteose, in Rio. There are special participations made by Chico Buarque, Milton Nascimento and Mercedes Sosa. In virtually his first interview as President of the Republic (the elections had just taken place), Fernando Henrique Cardoso quotes sentences of Caetano's; for him, the thoughts of the artist regarding Brazil are a model to be followed.
December "Tropicália duo" begins its Brazilian tour through Rio, São Paulo and Belo Horizonte. |

February The book "Caetano - esse cara" (Caetano - that guy), organized by Héber Fonseca, is published by Revan publishers, including interviews given throughout his career in various publications, radio and television stations.
March and April The desire to celebrate the 26 years of Tropicalism and thirty years of friendship reunites Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil in a studio, for the recording of a new album together. The album had started being prepared before and marks the return of the two artists working together.
August Release of "Tropicália 2", by Caetano and Gil, by Polygram, the most awaited and commented album of the year in Brazil. Amongst the most remarkable songs, "Haiti", a social rap done by them; the hommage "Cinema novo", also by the two of them; and "Desde de que o samba e samba", by Caetano.
25th of September Gil and Caetano do the show "Tropicália 2" at the Praça da Apoteose, in Rio; the show will be taken to the Polo de Arte e Cultura of Anhembi, in Sao Paulo, on the 2nd of October. |

January "Caetano, por que não?" ("Caetano, why not?") is the title of a study of the artist, reviewing his life as a poetic-musician, written by the academics Gilda Dieguez and Ivo Lucchesi; the book is published by Francisco Alves.
25th of January An audience estimated at 50 thousand people attend his show at Anhangabaú, in Sao Paulo, for the anniversary of the city.
7th of March Birth of Zeca Lavigne Veloso, Caetano’s second son and his first with Paula Lavigne, in Rio.
March "Circuladô", the show, premiers at Canecão, in Rio.
April During the interview program of Jô Soares - "Jô onze e meia", on SBT -, Caetano unexpectedly decides to tell who denounced him in 1968, initiating the process which got him put in jail. The radio announcer Randal Juliano. He apparently informed the police - without checking the accuracy of the information, to the great pleasure of the military authorities - that Caetano and Gil had disrespected the two national symbols, making a parody of the national anthem and tearing up the flag.
May For the second time, Caetano is awarded the Sharp Music Prize.
August His 50th birthday, on the 7th, is used as excuse for several tributes by the media. The main one, by TV Manchete, airs a special series of five programs, directed by Walter Salles. "O tempo não pára e no entanto ele nunca envelhece" ("Time never stops yet he never grows old").
December The show was so successful that it was turned into a double album: the CD "Circuladô vivo", which is released. |

April Recommences the national tour of "Acústico".
21st April His show celebrating Dia da Terra (Earth Day) attracts 50 thousand people in Botafogo, Rio.
June Completes the list of releases of all his albums (all the ones done until then) into laser (LPs and CDs).
September Shows at the New York Town Hall. The stay at the center of the world extends to his new album, produced once again by Arto Lindsay.
October Publishes a long article, with profound cultural implications, about the singer Carmen Miranda in "The New York Times". The text, which will attract the attention of the Alfred Knopf publishers, will be published later in the "Folha de São Paulo".
November Release of "Circuladô". The CD’s main title stands out, composed by Caetano from fragments of "proesia" (prose + poesia) "Galaxias", by the poet Haroldo de Campos; two new thinking-songs about Brazil and its integration at international level: "Fora da ordem" (Out of Order) and "Cu du mundo" (Arse of the world); and two more from more familiar origins, one about his wife, Paulinha, "Ela ela" (She she), and the other to announce their son, "Boas vindas" (Welcome). In a letter to Caetano, the President of the Republic, Fernando Collor de Melo, suggests a meeting between them. Caetano (who voted for Leonel Brizola, in the first round of the presidential elections of 1990, and for Lula da Silva, in the second) will end-up not answering the letter. |

26th January An attempt is made against Caetano’s house in Salvador, where he is spending his holidays (as he does every summer). In the early hours of the day, a bomb explodes and three shots are fired. In their room, he and his wife suffered nothing. Important: almost two weeks before, Caetano had made harsh criticisms to the administration of the mayor Fernando José.
2nd February The saddest day of Iemanjá of the artist’s life. In Rio, Gil’s son dies, Pedro Gadelha Gil Moreira, Caetano’s godson. Pedro had been in a coma for the last week, after a car accident. He was a drummer (he played in his father’s band), and was very close to Moreno, Caetano’s son.
July Participates in the Montreux Jazz Festival, in Switzerland.
October Finally his "American album", "Caetano Veloso", of 1986, is released in Brazil. To promote it, he premiers, accompanied by three other musicians, at the Canecão in a new "acoustic" show. |
